People and Culture
Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from and where do you live currently?
I was born in Austin, TX and moved to NYC when I was five years old. I’ve lived here ever since, save for a four year stint in Evanston, IL for undergrad. I consider myself a New Yorker first and foremost, but am lucky to have dual citizenship with the US and South Africa.
When did you start at Even and what is your current role? Describe your team and how it fits into the company.
I’m fairly new to Even, having joined in December 2021. We were acquired by MoneyLion on my fourth day, which made for an eventful first week! I am the Director of Partnerships at Even and my team is focused on growing revenue in new and nascent verticals, from Savings to Insurance to Mortgages. I work closely with our Partner Solutions team to scale vertical integrations with existing partners and with our Platform Sales teams to find net-new growth opportunities.
What is your favorite thing about working at Even?
I love the culture at Even. Everyone here is so talented and diligent, while prioritizing collaboration at the core of their day to day. I’m always pleasantly surprised how many people are in the office each day, despite it being completely optional. Even has built a culture where everyone loves working together, and as a newbie myself, I’m very grateful we have such a welcoming and friendly environment.
What has been your biggest accomplishment or crowning achievement working at Even so far?
We’re very growth-oriented at Even, but historically that has understandably manifested as prioritizing our most established vertical: Personal Loans. I was brought in to help champion our other financial verticals, internally and externally.
Over the last couple months, this has often taken the shape of acting like an external consultant: interviewing various teams (including Product, Data, In-house Vertical Specialists, and so on) to get a holistic view of the current status of the vertical; analyzing our strengths and potential obstacles to define our best go to market strategy; and then working cross functionally to implement these tactics. We’re almost done strategizing, and I’m excited for us to put everything into action.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time for hobbies?
I was on the South African National fencing team for the last 10 years and recently took a break due to a torn tendon in my foot. Now that I’m fully healed, I’m still enjoying all this spare time and want to try out some different activities before I return to fencing.
So far that’s included learning to surf in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and signing up for stand up comedy classes at the Comedy Cellar.
What words of advice or encouragement would you have for a prospective Even employee?
At its heart, Even is a rag-tag bunch of creative problem solvers. We want to hear your great ideas, so don’t be afraid to find your voice early and help us make Even even better!
Also, be sure to make an early effort to get to know everyone (in-person and remotely) as collaboration is at the heart of success here.
